Measuring deformations of wheel-produced ceramics using high resolution 3D reconstructions

چکیده
1. Introduction 1 Many artifacts, such as wheel-produced ceramics, are intended to be axially symmetric. Therefore, the boundaries of their intersections by planes that are perpendicular to the axis of rotation should be perfect circles (we shall use the term " horizontal sections " for these sections). However, these ideally symmetric objects may suffer deformations when still on the wheel, or during the drying and firing stages. As a result, the afore-mentioned sections will deviate from perfect circles. In traditional archaeological publications which rely on hand drawn single profiles, this information is completely lost – the drawn profile can only represent an average profile. The introduction of accurate measuring devices such as 3D scanning cameras (Leymarie et al., representations of pottery available. Using these data, it is now possible to 1 Other version of this research was already published by some of us as part of a paper dealing with morphological analysis of planar curves (Saragusti et al. 2005).

3D scanning technology as a standard archaeological tool for pottery analysis: practice and theory
This article reports on the successful completion of a large-scale pilot project, where 3D scanning technology, and newly developed software to optimally identify the rotation axis of wheel-produced ceramics, were used as practical tools for pottery analysis. Approximately 1000 potsherds from several sites and periods were scanned, their axis of symmetry computed, and their mean profiles drawn....
متن کاملValidation of cone beam computed tomography as a tool to explore root canal anatomy.
INTRODUCTION Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) can provide dentists with high-quality 3-dimensional images of dental structures because of its high spatial resolution. The reconstructions of root canal systems given by the Kodak 9000 3D were compared with histologic sections to evaluate the reliability of the reconstructions. METHODS Nine intact freshly extracted teeth with closed apexes w...
متن کاملVirtual pre-operative reconstruction planning for comminuted articular fractures
3D puzzle solving methods for this purpose were previously developed utilizing surrogate specimens [1]. Accurate fracture reconstructions were obtained by interactively matching native fragment surfaces to an intact template. While successfully piloted in a clinical case, more automated methods will be required in order for this approach to be practical in a clinical setting [2]. Surrogate geom...
متن کاملDesign and Properties of Glass-Ceramics
The regenerator glass-ceramic is produced as a honeycomb product for a turbine engine heat exchanger. It is made from a powdered glass frit, which as a slurry can impregnate paper that is wound as alternately corrugated sheets on a wheel. After firing, a porous ceramic regenerator wheel is produced that allows energy to be transferred from hot exhaust gases to the cold intake air in the turbine...
متن کاملCeramics Fragments Digitization by Photogrammetry, Reconstructions and Applications
This paper presents an application of photogrammetry on ceramic fragments from two excavation sites located north-west of France. The restitution by photogrammetry of these different fragments allowed reconstructions of the potteries in their original state or at least to get to as close as possible. We used the 3D reconstructions to compute some metrics and to generate a presentation support b...
